DEPRESSION
A mood disorder that causes sadness, feeling down, having a loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities and if these symptoms persists and affect our life substantially it may be depression.
According to World Health Organisation (WHO), depression is the most common illness worldwide.
Facts on depression:
- Depression seems likely to be more common in women than in men.
- The causes of depression are likely to be complex combination of genetics, biological, environmental factors or psychosocial factors.
- The World Health Organization estimates that depression will be the second highest medical cause of disability by the year 2030, second only to HIV/AIDS.
- Mood changes, cognitive (memory and thought process) changes, physical changes, and behavioural changes.
Symptoms of depression:
- Unintentional weight loss
- Fatigue/ Loss of energy
- Impaired ability to think or to make decisions or to concentrate
- Feeling of worthlessness
- Insomnia/hypersomnia
- Anxiety
- Recurrent thoughts of death/suicide
Ayurveda has formulated effective treatment methods. Depressed is referred to as Mano Avasad in ayurveda. Ayurvedic remedies can be used with traditional medicine. It should always, be done with approval and supervision from a doctor. A physician monitors your progress, the hope is you may be able to minimise or eliminate your dependence on strong medications by bringing your body back to balance with diet, exercise and other Ayurvedic treatments.
